Thanks to Steve for a serious bit of research on the whereabouts of some former Ardija players whose stars shone brightly but briefly in the skies over Saitama. 2006 goal-free forward Saul Martinez has returned to his native Honduras and is currently fourth-top scorer in the local top division with new club CD Marathon. 2007 equivalent Enilton plays for the unusually-named MeuSport after having moved on from Vasco da Gama.
Meanwhile two players who also enjoyed spells at Omiya last season are now plying their trade in the second flight of the league system in the US, the USL. Brazilian Salles, scorer of a key winning goal against Nagoya Grampus, is now to be found at Rochester Rhinos, while ex-Japanese international Takashi Hirano makes an appearance in the USL First Division All-League Second XI after his impressive displays in defence for Vancouver Whitecaps.

| Sakuma Appointed At VFK |
Ex-Ardija General Manager, coach and technical director Satoru Sakuma has been appointed General Manager of J2 outfit Ventforet Kofu. Sakuma, 45, played for the Squirrels' predecessor corporate club NTT Kanto and became their goalkeeping coach in 1994. Having taken on various roles over the next thirteen years, his career at Omiya peaked when he was appointed emergency short-term coach of the first team, following the dismissal of Robert Verbeek.
Sakuma was just able to steer the Squirrels to J1 safety thanks in the main to dramatic key victories over Urawa Reds and FC Tokyo, but immediately stood down at the end of the 2007 season. He became the club's technical director as Yasuhiro Higuchi moved from Montedio Yamagata to take over as coach, but eventually quit Omiya for good midway through the current campaign.

| Emperor's Cup Opponents Narrowed Down |
The identity of Ardija's opponents in the Fourth Round of this year's Emperor's Cup tournament is gradually becoming narrowed down. Four non-league sides are now in the running to play Cerezo Osaka in the Third Round, the winner of that game then earning the right to take on the Squirrels at Omiya Park at the beginning of November.
In this coming weekend's First Round ties, JFL side Ryutsu Keizai University play Yokohama Soccer & Culture Club from the Kanto League while one of the competition's remaining minnows - Tamaho FC from the Yamanashi Prefectural League - take on JFLers Sony Sendai. It is from this quartet that Cerezo and Omiya's opponents will come.

| Niwa Loaned To Wasps |
Just to confirm OF's point that reserve defender Daiki Niwa - currently on loan from Gamba Osaka - has in turn been rented out to Avispa Fukuoka until the end of January 2009. The 22-year-old, who spent last year as a mainstay in the back four at J2 minnows Tokushima Vortis, has made only two appearances in the Nabisco Cup for Ardija.
